There are two main areas in radiography, diagnostic and therapeutic.

• Diagnostic radiographers use produce and interpret images that are used to diagnose injury or disease.
• Therapeutic radiographers (also known as radiotherapy radiographers) use radiation to treat patients for conditions such as cancer.

Due to recent changes in legislation, 'radiographer', 'diagnostic radiographer' and 'therapeutic radiographer' are now protected professional titles and anyone who uses them must be registered with the Health Professions Council.
