Immigration and Visas

If you are from a non-EU country, the UK government will require you to obtain a valid Visa to legally work in the UK.

Your country of residence, profession and age can all affect which immigration alternative is best for your circumstances. Our consultants will recommend and provide comprehensive information on the most suitable option for you. To guarantee timely processing of your visa, it is important that you follow our advice and ensure that all components of your application are submitted correctly. Below is a brief description of the options available, however you should talk with your consultant before applying for any visas:

United Kingdom ancestry

Job Seekers who qualify for UK ancestry (i.e., you have a British parent or grandparent) currently have a right to work in the UK for up to 4 years. More up to date information can be obtained from your nearest British High Commission or embassy or by visiting the following web site: www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk.

Dual nationality

If you hold dual nationality between your country and Britain or another European Union country then you have the right to work in the UK.

'Working Holiday' visa

This is a most commonly used route for employment in the UK. If you are not yet 31 years old you can apply to enter the UK on a working holiday visa and this can be for a period of up to two years. The conditions of entry are strict and are detailed below.

You must:

  1. Be under the age of 31 when you apply for the 'Working Holiday' visa.
  2. Be a 'Commonwealth' citizen, 'British Dependent Territories' citizen or a 'British Overseas' citizen.
  3. Be unmarried or married to a person who at the same time qualifies for a 'Working Holiday' visa and you intend to visit the UK together.
  4. Not have any children who are 5 years of age or over, or who will reach 5 years of age before you complete your stay in the UK.
  5. Be intending to stay in the UK for no longer than 2 years.
  6. Have sufficient funds to support your initial stay and to be able to purchase your return ticket.

You can organize a 'Working Holiday' visa by contacting your nearest British High Commission or embassy.

Work Permits

For certain job types, UK employers are able to apply for a work permit on your behalf. Should a work permit be approved you will be able to work for that employer for the period of the permit.

Recruitment Agencies are unable to apply for work permits, only UK employers who have a specific job to offer a specific person can only make an application. Before a work permit is issued, the Home Office will need to be satisfied that a resident of the UK or the European Union cannot fill the vacancy.
